If you've ever needed a vehicle safety inspection on short notice, you've probably experienced the same frustrating reality.

You call a local automotive shop looking for an appointment.

The answer is:

"Sorry, we're booking about a week out."

You call another shop.

Same answer.

And another.

Same result.

At that point, most consumers have two choices: wait, or find someone who can accommodate them immediately.

More often than not, that immediate solution ends up being a dealership or large franchise operation.

The surprising part is that many customers willingly pay significantly more for the same service simply because it is available sooner.

An Observation Four Years in the Making

Before Schedule This Car, I spent four years building and operating Inspect This Car, a platform focused on vehicle inspections.

During that time, I spoke with countless consumers looking for urgent safety inspections.

Many of them weren't calling because they wanted the cheapest inspection.

They weren't calling because they were loyal to a particular shop.

They were calling because they needed an inspection now.

Perhaps they had just purchased a vehicle.

Perhaps they needed to register a motorcycle before the weekend.

Perhaps they needed a commercial vehicle back on the road.

The reason varied, but the common theme remained the same:

Urgency.

As these requests came in, I would contact our affiliated inspection stations and attempt to secure appointments.

The challenge was that many independent shops were already busy.

The earliest appointment available was often several days away, sometimes longer.

When I called customers back with those options, many declined.

A few days later, I would follow up and ask what happened.

The answer was remarkably consistent.

"I found someone who could do it today."

The Convenience Premium

What stood out wasn't that customers found another provider.

What stood out was where they found them.

Many ended up at franchise dealerships or large chains such as Canadian Tire.

And in many cases, they paid noticeably more than they would have at an independent shop.

Why?

Because those organizations could accommodate them faster.

The premium wasn't attached to a better inspection.

It wasn't attached to a better certificate.

It wasn't attached to a different regulatory standard.

The premium was attached to availability.

Customers were paying for convenience.

The Opportunity Independent Shops Are Missing

Independent automotive service providers perform excellent work every day.

They hold the same certifications.

They follow the same regulations.

They provide the same legally recognized inspections.

Yet when consumers need urgent service, many independent shops struggle to capture that demand.

Not because they lack capability.

Not because they lack expertise.

But because there has never been a simple mechanism for monetizing availability and convenience.

As a result, valuable revenue often flows toward larger organizations simply because they can offer faster access.

A Different Way of Thinking About Capacity

Every day, automotive businesses experience scheduling fluctuations.

Appointments cancel.

Technicians become available.

Service bays sit unused for portions of the day.

These opportunities often disappear without generating revenue.

In many industries, availability itself has value.

Hotels understand this.

Airlines understand this.

Restaurants understand this.

Yet automotive service has traditionally relied on fixed pricing regardless of urgency or demand.

We believe there is a better way.

Why Schedule This Car Exists

Schedule This Car was built around a simple idea:

Consumers already place value on convenience.

Independent shops already have the expertise.

The missing piece is a mechanism that efficiently connects urgent demand with available capacity.

Our goal is not to replace shop management systems.

Our goal is not to change how automotive businesses operate.

Our goal is to help independent service providers compete more effectively on convenience while helping consumers access the services they need when they need them most.

Looking Ahead

The automotive service industry is changing.

Consumers increasingly expect faster access, greater transparency, and more convenient options.

At the same time, independent service providers are looking for new ways to grow revenue and compete with larger organizations.

We believe both challenges can be addressed through better matching of demand and availability.

That's why we built Schedule This Car.

And that's the journey we're excited to share with you.

A Note from the Founder

Over the past four years, I've had the privilege of speaking with hundreds of vehicle owners and automotive professionals across Ontario.

One thing became increasingly clear: customers don't simply value automotive services—they value timely access to those services.

Independent shops already possess the expertise, certifications, and professionalism to serve these customers. What has been missing is a better way to connect urgent demand with available capacity.

That's why we built Schedule This Car.

If our articles help you better understand the automotive industry, we'd love to have you follow our journey. And if you're looking for same-day or next-day automotive services—or you're an independent shop interested in growing your business—we invite you to explore what we're building.

Thank you for reading.
