Ontario Safety Standards Certificate
What is an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate?
A Safety Standards Certificate—often called an SSC or simply a “safety”—shows that a vehicle met Ontario’s minimum safety standards on the date it was inspected. It does not guarantee the vehicle’s overall quality, reliability or future condition.
To obtain one, the vehicle must pass an inspection at a DriveON Vehicle Inspection Centre licensed by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation. After a successful inspection, the centre issues confirmation of the certificate by email.

When do you need a safety inspection?
Ontario identifies several situations in which a safety inspection and certificate are required. Common examples include:
- Transferring most used vehicles to a new owner, other than an eligible transfer to a spouse
- Registering a vehicle brought into Ontario from another province, territory or country
- Registering a rebuilt vehicle
- Changing a vehicle’s status from unfit to fit
A vehicle may be purchased and registered without a certificate, but Ontario states that plates cannot be attached without one. Requirements and exemptions depend on the transaction, so confirm your situation with ServiceOntario or Ontario’s official guidance.
What does the inspection cover?
A licensed technician follows the provincial Passenger/Light-Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard. The inspection is based on the vehicle’s condition at that time and includes prescribed visual checks, measurements, component testing and a road test where required.
- Powertrain, including applicable fuel and exhaust components
- Suspension and steering
- Service and parking brake systems
- Instruments and auxiliary equipment
- Lamps and electrical systems
- Vehicle body, occupant protection and visibility-related components
- Tires, wheels and applicable coupling devices
- Required road-test performance checks
The technician must complete an inspection report. Certain measurements and observations—such as tire tread depth and specified brake measurements—are recorded as part of the inspection process.
Will my vehicle pass?
Only a licensed technician completing the full inspection can determine whether a vehicle meets the standard. Common areas that may require attention include brakes, tires, steering, suspension, lamps, exhaust components, windshield or wiper operation, structural condition and occupant-safety equipment.
A warning light, unusual noise, fluid leak, damaged tire or known mechanical concern is worth discussing with the inspection centre. A pre-inspection repair, however, does not guarantee the vehicle will pass because the official outcome is based on its condition during the inspection.
What happens if the vehicle does not pass?
The technician should provide an inspection report identifying the items that did not meet the provincial standard. The certificate cannot be issued until the vehicle satisfies the applicable requirements.
Repairs are separate from the inspection unless the booked offer expressly says otherwise. Before authorizing work, ask the service provider for the repair scope, price, timing and re-inspection terms. You may choose where repairs are performed, subject to the inspection centre’s policies and provincial requirements.
How much does an Ontario safety inspection cost?
Ontario does not regulate the price of a safety inspection. Each inspection centre sets its own fee, and repairs are normally additional. Each responding affiliate includes its price and relevant terms in its offer so the customer can compare before selecting and paying.

Rideshare drivers often need to complete an inspection quickly before driving or to keep required documents current. Submit a same-day, next-day or after-hours request once, then allow eligible participating affiliated shops up to 30 minutes to respond with offers.
An exclusive preferred rate may be included for ride share drivers in an affiliate’s offer. Compare the offers received for price, eligibility and inclusions. Rideshare companies may have their own requirements in addition to Ontario rules; verify the current requirements in your driver account before submitting a request.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Safety Standards Certificate a warranty?
No. It confirms that the vehicle met Ontario’s minimum safety standards on the inspection date. It does not guarantee future condition, reliability or freedom from defects.
How long is an Ontario safety certificate valid?
It is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection. If it expires before the vehicle is registered, a new inspection and certificate will be required.
Does Schedule This Car offer routine appointments later in the week?
No. The platform is designed for urgent booking needs. Customers can submit only same-day, next-day or after-hours service requests.
Does every participating shop offer all three appointment types?
No. A shop may respond to same-day, next-day, after-hours or a combination of request types. Eligible shops decide whether to submit an offer based on their participation and capacity.
Does the inspection price include repairs?
No. Inspection fees, repairs, parts, taxes and re-inspection charges will be reviewed separately with your chosen Schedule This Car affiliated shop, post inspection and before you authorize the necessary work required to meet the Safety Standards Certification.
Can Schedule This Car guarantee my vehicle will pass?
No. Schedule This Car distributes urgent requests and facilitates affiliate offers, customer selection and payment. Only the licensed technician performing the inspection can determine whether the vehicle meets Ontario’s standard.
Can I use the certificate to transfer or register a used vehicle?
A valid certificate is required for many used-vehicle transfers and registration situations. Transaction-specific requirements and exemptions should be confirmed through ServiceOntario or Ontario’s official guidance.
