Ontario Safety Standards Certificate

What a safety inspection does—and does not—confirm.

A Safety Standards Certificate confirms that the vehicle met Ontario’s minimum safety requirements when it was inspected. It is not a warranty, and an appointment does not guarantee a pass.

Licensed inspection provider

The inspection and certificate must come from a licensed DriveON Vehicle Inspection Centre.

36-day certificate period

Ontario states that the certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection.

Repairs may be required

If the vehicle does not meet the standard, repairs may be needed before a certificate can be issued.

Review the current requirements on the Government of Ontario Safety Standards Certificate page.

Safety inspection FAQ

Common questions, answered directly.

What is an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate?

A Safety Standards Certificate confirms that a vehicle met Ontario’s minimum safety standards on the inspection date. It is not a warranty or a guarantee of the vehicle’s future condition.

When is a safety inspection commonly required?

Common situations include transferring a used vehicle to a new owner, registering a vehicle from outside Ontario, changing a vehicle from unfit to fit, and registering certain rebuilt vehicles. Confirm the requirements for your situation with ServiceOntario.

How long is an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate valid?

Ontario states that a Safety Standards Certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection. If it expires before registration is completed, another inspection and certificate may be required.

Does booking an inspection guarantee that the vehicle will pass?

No. The licensed inspection centre determines the result under the applicable Ontario standard. Repairs may be required before a Safety Standards Certificate can be issued.

Does Schedule This Car perform the inspection?

No. Schedule This Car is a marketplace that facilitates requests, shop offers, payment and appointment coordination. The selected independent automotive service provider performs the inspection and is responsible for the inspection result.
